Harbor Launch at IMET gathered together a unique group of technical experts on Thursday, May 10th. They regularly partner with academic and industry researchers outside their own institutions.
Each of the four organizations took 10 minutes to explain their capabilities and general “rules of the road” when working with external groups. One of the common threads was that these groups haven’t just opened up their physical resources — be they equipment, patient samples, cell lines, etc. They also contribute informal and formal expertise, helping to streamline IACUC processes and SBIR/STTR proposal preparation, for example.
You can learn more about each of these fantastic organizations below:
- The University of Maryland School of Medicine’s Center for Innovative Biomedical Resources (http://www.medschool.umaryland.edu/CIBR/) provides services that include everything from animal work to clinical work, omics studies, and bioinformatics support to assay development. We heard from Rena Lapidus, Director of Translational Laboratory Shared Services and Assistant Director for Shared Services, University of Maryland Marlene and Stewart Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center. See the presentation and contact information.
- The University of Maryland Baltimore’s County Molecular Characterization and Analysis Complex (https://mcac.umbc.edu/) helps characterize compounds using a suite of instruments and techniques, including mass spectrometry, NMR, chromatography, and spectroscopy. We heard from Joshua Wilhide, the Facility Manager. See the presentation and contact information.
- The Frederick National Laboratory for Cancer Research (https://frederick.cancer.gov/) works at the forefront of basic, translational, and clinical science with a focus on cancer, AIDS, and infectious disease. They operate in the public interest as a shared national resource, and collaborate with public and private partners to discover, to innovate, and to improve human health.
